GRIEf
Some things you should know about grief…
FIRST, GRIEVING IS A NATURAL PROCESS.
WE ALL GO THROUGH IT AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER.
SECOND, A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IS THAT
THERE’S SOME TIME LIMIT TO GRIEF.
It’s easy to think that if you
don’t heal in “X” amount
of time, you’re doing it wrong,
or there’s something wrong with
you.
The truth is, there’s a lot of
grief that never goes away. But the intensity
does subside.
THERE ARE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF.
Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression.
Acceptance.
They’re not sequential. They’re
not mutually exclusive. Sometimes you’re
in more than one stage at a time. Sometimes
you go back and forth.
It’s often helpful when you’re
grieving to identify what stage you’re
in. When you find your temper flaring,
recognize, “Well, this is the anger
stage.” That’s perfectly appropriate.
A common thing that happens when you
are grieving is that people in your life
are so uncomfortable with your pain that
they try to fix it. “Get out more.”
“Get on with your life.” “It
was meant to be.” “They’re
in a better place.” “Life
goes on.” “Keep a stiff upper
lip.”
You hear all these platitudes because,
basically, the people around you are unable
to tolerate or withstand your grief. So
they want to fix it.
YOU NEED TO HEAL AT YOUR OWN PACE, IN
YOUR OWN WAY. GRIEF COUNSELING CAN HELP.
